I would love there to be a post-work AI powered utopia, but I just can't see any feasible paths where that could happen. As successful companies make more and more money with fewer and fewer humans, and that money accrues to a tiny minority of the population, what government is going to take steps to extract what would now be seen as extreme levels of taxation to fund a reasonable UBI? More likely is that the vast majority will live in your option #4, in near poverty with just enough to live, pay a Netflix sub and a mobile phone contract.
Do it the way YOU want to David. It's your gig. Those of us who have been around for a multitude of your videos will imagine you waving your arms and raising an excited voice (or puffing up that hill you liked to walk on. You unload a tremendous amount of info/thought on us all the time (and we lap it up). So...what ever makes you comfortable. Go for it!
The Hippies I grew up around had a saying, “think globally, act locally.”
I see the same potentials that you mention here, but I also primarily see them as actors on the global stage.
Yes I agree that we may not see the global systemic change that we know is possible, but on the level of individuals and their immediate communities I still see great potential.
The “system” with its endless diversity of distractions and trinkets will likely continue, some new form of the rat race will emerge, still underwritten with the same premise of work, consume, obey and die, as it is now.
Today, as it’s been in the past, it is possible to detach from the system. In my younger years, the first step in accomplishing this was turning the T.V. off, or better yet, throwing out a 3rd story window, putting down the newspapers and popular magazines. Today it’s deleting social media and being vigilant with training your algorithms. Same shit, different day. I don’t see this changing, just the enticements that perpetuate the system becoming more addictive and confusing.
Mental and physical health on the personal level, then community building with other mentally/ physically healthy people, seems like the best path forward.
Humans seem to only have enough bandwidth to navigate about 150 social connections IRL. We are fundamentally tribal by nature. Tribalism, by current definition seems to be the hijacking of this fundamental trait, to manipulate people who actually have no tribe.
I suppose the future I hope for is one where Ai allows for more harmonious and synergistic relationships between millions of smaller tribal groups. I don’t see a top down utopia emerging through any means, technological or otherwise.
Sorry for rambling here, as always, your posts are informative and thought provoking 🚀

Precisely.

Re: Nightmare #4: The Cyberpunk Hellscape Wins
See BLACK MIRROR, season 7, episode 1 just released on Netflix. The hellscape is fucking near.
I'm not really freaking out, it's that your trenchant nightmare struck a nerve when I watched it.
